Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT)

Program Type: 
Certification Program

This Certified Patient Care Technician program will prepare the student for an entry-level position as a patient care technician. Emphasis is on technical skills necessary to perform personal care to complex patients, implementation of selected portions of care plans, including respiratory services, rehabilitation services, EKG and phlebotomy under the supervision of registered nurses.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible for National Certification through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Course Prerequisite: 
Some states require CNA licensing prior to becoming certified as a Patient Care Technician, however, this course of study includes the competencies required. Applicants in Michigan must have a current/valid nurse assistant certificate from the state of Michigan to apply to the program, a high school diploma or a GED.
Career Opportunities: 

Graduates may work in Acute Care Hospitals; Long-term Care and Home Health Care companies.

Program Information: 

Students will complete a total of 140 clock hours. 4 weeks of classroom training and 1 week of externship.

Certification: 

Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a Certificate and a letter of Completion and will be eligible for the National Certification examination through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

National Healthcareer Association also offers CPCT students the opportunity to take the Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician Examinations after successfully completing the program.

Upon passing the Certification examinations, students will receive the following three (3) certifications:

  • Patient Care Technician Certification
  • Phlebotomy Technician Certification
  • EKG Technician Certification
